Ponce De Leon traipsed around the Bahamas and Florida looking for the fabled fountain of youth. He would have fared much better had he been on a college campus at the beginning of the semester! The energy is infectious!
This last week we welcomed our new and returning students back to campus. Kudos go to Vicki Hajewski, Jen Bird, Mickey Fitch, Tammy Fanning, and all of the many, many other staff and volunteers who made Move-In Day and the Wow experience a successful one. It was clear from walking around the dorms on Move-In Day that the parents and students appreciated all of the care and attention they received – from sturdy hands to haul “stuff” up and down the stairs, to the assembly of bunk beds, to help with lost room keys.
The Wow Welcome early Thursday evening and the activities through the weekend kept our new students minds busy and off of leaving friends and family behind as well as orienting them to their new home here at UW-Superior. Saturday was competition among the new freshmen WoW teams. Students learned the fight song, engaged in several competitive sports like the three-legged race, wheel barrow race, and ping-pong ball on a spoon race, as well as tried to whistle after eating 5 crackers!

As we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the campus community is invited to pay tribute to our nation’s heroes. A September 11th Memorial Table will be set up daily at the Yellowjacket Union from Thursday, September 8th through Tuesday, September 13th. At the table individuals can reflect on how the events of September 11th effected their life and write remembrance of the event on a small card.
Other September 11th events hosted in the Twin Ports:
- Flag Ceremony at Great Lakes School – 10:15am on Friday, September 9th
- Celebration and Picnic at the Golden Living Center (1012 N 37th Street, Superior) – Noon – 3:00pm on Friday, September 9th
- 10th Anniversary Remembrance 9/11 at the DECC Auditorium in Duluth – 1pm, Sunday, September 11th
The Yellowjacket athletic teams enjoyed a huge first week, with men’s soccer, volleyball and women’s soccer going a combined 7-1 to open the season. Women’s soccer won its first match of the season in a big way, 5-1 over Alverno College on Saturday afternoon. Speaking of Alverno, the Yellowjacket volleyball team traveled there for a tournament this weekend and came home with the first place hardware, going a perfect 4-0 with wins over Northland, Alverno, Presentation and Mount Mary. Congratulations to freshman Keely Deadrick for being named tournament MVP and making the all-tournament team. Junior Nikki Gosson also made the all-tournament team. Men’s soccer had a flair for the dramatic on the weekend. On Saturday, they opened the season with a solid, all-around effort in a 3-0 shutout of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. On Sunday, after falling behind early, Dan Warnke and Eric Nilsen scored 1:23 apart in the closing minutes to tie the game, before Nilsen scored the winner early in overtime to help the Yellowjackets improve to 2-0. Congratulations on a great weekend!
Here’s to a great start to the semester!
